SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER TO THIRD GRADE CCD PARENTS

I want to start this year by introducing myself to those parents who do not know me.  My name is Sandra Schenewerk.  I have been teaching Third Grade CCD for four years now.  This is the smallest class I have had since I began teaching CCD.  All of my former classes were between 18 and 20 students.

I start my classes with a prayer and ask who attended Mass this week.  I also believe in teaching children this young to start putting others first instead of expecting everything for themselves.  As part of that practice, I encourage my students to do what I call “good deeds” throughout the week.  After the prayer, I will ask the students who did a good deed this week.  I consider a good deed as something good they did on their own without being told to do or paid to do or a chore they had to do at home.  This could include helping to shovel the sidewalk after a snow storm or, better yet, helping to shovel the neighbor’s sidewalk.  I try to get the children to think about these deeds and start doing things like this on their own.

Our first couple of classes will pay attention to topics such as “God calls us by Name” which teaches how each of us are held, individually, in God’s eyes.  We will also talk about some of the saints in the Old Testament such as, Ruth and Abram; and the New Testament such as, St. Clare and St. Francis.  We will also discuss how each of us has a gift from God whether it’s being good at math or music or being a good football player.  We should use our talents that God gives us as he wishes and not waste them.  We will also talk about Mary and her special place in Jesus’ life and learn the basics of the Rosary.

We will have homework every week.  So, I encourage the parents to look for the homework and help their child complete it and return it the following week.  Most of the time, it will be the Review at the end of each chapter.  We will have a test at the end of each Unit.  All the homework and tests will be graded and sent back home with the students for the parents to see their child’s progress in class.  If a student needs extra help during the year, I will be happy to work with them and the parents to help them catch up.

You can feel free to contact me through email or a note with your child if you have any questions or concerns.  I am hoping for a great CCD year.

Thank you,
