Summer Assignments

Welcome Class of 2021!

If you have any questions at any time, please let me know:

[email protected]

The summer review assignments, along with the choices for summer novels to read are available here, from the district's Weekly Blast:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xqwKRVnoZnqBpLmOzR235FzXsfRiybn1K0WmUFfJJ0Q/edit

Please know, I broke down the IXL assignments to focus on reviewing specific skills that were introduced or reinforced during seventh grade.  This was based on information shared among teachers and from completed work through IXL. I focussed on some of the most important skills students should have as review over the summer. According to the shared information, there are no new skills in these review assignments.

Incoming eighth-grade students are to practice the seventh-grade level of those skills in IXL, not eighth-grade skills.  The eighth-grade level introduces new concepts and skills I will be teaching throughout the year.

Please use the dates on the chart as a guide for completion and understand some of the reviews may take longer than others and others shorter.  I tried to pair up skills to allow for time considerations from week to week.

There are several skills (notably Prepositions) listed as Level Six (Grade Six); this skill is not fully reviewed through IXL past Level/Grade Six and one that students should have review and practice during the summer.

I  will be able to monitor students through the IXL program and be able to properly credit them when we return in September. Please be sure to have your student make a copy of the IXL chart to help track progress and then share a copy of the chart through Google Classroom on our return.

NOTE:   The IXL program adjusted things over the summer. O.3 on the chart I created shows Using In-Text Citations --  It is now O.2 in IXL.  I hope this does not cause any confusion.

If you have any questions or concerns, please message me, I am here to help!

PARENT INFORMATION

This information may be adjusted as we move closer to a return to school. Please check for updates at the end of August.

Thank you for understanding.

Parents - please know I work with Google Classroom for student assignments.  You will find writing assignments, along with other classwork/homework on this website; I encourage students to submit their work through Classroom and not to "share" using the email link unless specifically instructed to do so.

You will be able to monitor your students' assignments and their work for the year.  Please understand you will need to access your child's work through their Google account for the district -  Please email me and I can send you an invite to join the class under your student's name.  Please understand that not all scores are posted to Google Classroom, but will be available through the Parent Portal. You are also able to monitor your students' assignments in IXL as well.

Please know I will endeavor to update the Portal on a weekly or semi-weekly basis; if you have any questions at any time, please do not hesitate to email or call me. I am usually able to respond to you within a day.

I will have individual class/section pages when the school year begins. Please look for updates as we prepare to return to school.

IMPORTANT NOTES for all my ELA classes

Students are also responsible for keeping any textbooks covered ALL year.  We will be using zip-loc bags to help protect student selected novels for study - please encourage your student to help protect these novels. If damaged, please replace. Thank you.

I kindly ask that BookSox not be used as they are not large enough for these texts and severely damage the spines of the books and lead to fines to repair the damage at the end of the year.  There are on-line videos that help show how to cover textbooks with heavy paper stock (paper bags) to better protect the books. This is a good video to use:

There are many creative videos available that give good directions for unique covers.

Throughout the year, please remember to check the Parent Portal for averages. I try to note work handed in and work missing.  Frequently, until I have an opportunity of scoring, the assignment will be "un-graded" but may show as being handed in for credit or show as "complete."  Please understand all collected student work is distributed at the end of the marking period. If you have any concerns regarding your student's work, please be sure to e-mail me.

Under the "Files" tab above, you will find additional pages that may be useful as well; these will include the lists of vocabulary, outlines for writing, power points, and a basic guide for research writing. - These are currently being revised and updated -

If students need assistance with grammar or grammar structure, literature information, or writing help there are links to excellent sites on the Internet.  Please check under the "Links" tab above.  This tab will be helpful throughout the year. You will also find useful tips and guides through the IXL program.

Please remember to always check this page - first - as I will have updates and information that concern all my Language Arts Classes.

If you have any questions or concerns,

please email me.
