Update
November , 2017
Room 183

So much to tell you - NEED PIZZA BOXES, about 12 more. If you have not brought one in please do so. We will make the Colorado regional relief maps on Monday or Tuesday. If you brought supplies already for this project (such as flour or salt), I will make sure you get one of the boxes I have. Please wipe out the remnants of your pizza before bringing it in. It is ok if it is a little greasy.
Notice went home in Thursday folder about the EXPERT EXPO. We will be starting our research. Students should talk over their idea with a parent, then bring me the idea written down on a piece of paper, preferably 8 ½ by 11 inches. (: I will approve and or assist the student in narrowing the topic so that it can be accomplished by April 30th. Please avoid topics that researchers have taken years and years to research. For instance, the topic of SPACE is out of reach for a 4th grader in 5 months. I plan to approve a topic for each student by Wednesday, so that they can check out a nonfiction book in our library on the topic. Keep that mind please, so that I can assist in the completion of the initial research with the sources available to us. I will be asking them to tell me what they are interested in or what nonfiction book they would like to read. Some students may need to go to the public library after this first part for additional research, but I hope that we will be able to handle it in house.
And then…..
Not to confuse or overwhelm anyone I want to let you know that I will be assigning a Colorado History Project that will not be due until 3rd Quarter. Since they will be researching a Colorado Landmark, many parents like to have the opportunity to take the time over the winter break to go and visit the landmark. I have the list of approved landmarks on Sign-up Genius, and I will release it for your sign-up next week. They need to know what landmark they are researching by December 18th. Students will also receive a rubric and a graphic organizer for their work. Just wanted to give you a heads up, and to keep the two projects, Expert Expo, and Colorado History Project sorted out.
It continues to be “full steam ahead” in room 183. We are working on reading an informative text on Islamic Empires, and answering questions explicitly. We are learning to quote a text, paraphrase, and write an informative paragraph from that in our own words without plagiarizing. This is a skill that will carry over into the history research, and the Expert Expo project.
