OBJECTIVES

In this course of study, after a brief review, you will learn about the history of the United States from after the Civil War to the present day. From this historical survey you will hopefully gain a greater understanding of what it is to be a socially responsible person in 21st century America.  Specifically, you will be responsible for analyzing continuity and change in American politics, society, economics and culture. You will need to know not only what happened, when and where and to whom, but most importantly attempt to understand WHY things happened.

DAILY ACTIVITIES

A period of class will often consist of, but not be limited to a variety of activities, which can include teacher lecture-presentations with note taking, question and answer review activities, group and student presentations of historical topics, informal and formal discussion of historical issues, creation of “realistic” historical artifacts (campaign posters, protest posters etc.), critical thinking questions and discussion, analysis of primary sources, debate of historical issues, and video documentaries with accompanying notes, questions and discussion, and possible student presentations and discussion of current events.

ASSESSMENT

Your class performance will be evaluated by formal tests, quizzes, class work, class activities, homework and participation. Tests will be given at the completion of each chapter, or sometimes several chapters. The format will vary, but all tests involve scantrons, SO BRING #2 PENCILS. Quizzes will be given frequently which cover prior days’ lessons. Class work and homework will be assigned on a daily basis, so look on the whiteboard for each day’s assignments. Weekly assignments will also be listed on the website http://new.schoolnotes.com/galet/  Unless otherwise notified, you will hand in your classwork and notes at the end of a chapter or unit in the form of a packet. However, homework will be handed in throughout the unit of study, usually due two classes after being assigned. So keep your work organized. Your participation grade will include discussion participation, class attendance and timely arrival, polite class behavior, and general attitude and alertness. Two finals will be given, one covering first semester material, another covering second semester topics.

DO NOT ASK ME WHAT ASSIGNMENTS YOU MISSED. LOOK THEM UP.

1. Late Assignments – All work is due on the date indicated by the teacher. Assignments not handed on the due date, unless in the category of an excused absence, will be given half credit up to the completion of the chapter or unit. Place late assignments in the “late” bin.

2. Test Makeups: Tests can be made up for excused absences only and must be made up BEFORE the next test. It is your responsibility to make sure your absences are excused.
