Hi there!
     Welcome to the eighth week of school.   It has been an amazing journey so far with your children and I am looking forward to more to come. This week is our next to last week in our first unit of Risks and Consequences. It is amazing how time flies. Don’t forget tomorrow is our first field trip of the year. Be sure to bring a bag lunch.

      Please visit Schoolnotes.com often. It will have helpful reminders of the week's homework as well as daily updates. For language arts this week:(10-6)    
We will:
*Be reading Two Tickets to Freedom throughout the week.
*Understand the selection vocabulary.
*Use the comprehension strategies asking questions and summarizing.
*Use the comprehension skill drawing conclusions throughout the week.
*Acquire skills for writing a free verse poem throughout the week.
*Develop fluency reading words and sentences.

For spelling this week:
This week we will focus on the /u/ and /oo/ sound.  Every week there will be 20 regular words and 5 challenge words. There will also be a bonus word every week as well. This week's bonus word will be cantankerous.

For math this week
We will:  
*Review for our benchmark assessment.
*Take our benchmark assessment
*Be introduced to using basic facts to solve multiplication problems with the factors of 10, 100 and 1,000.
*Learn how to use compatible numbers, multiples of 10,  and other strategies to help them multiply mentally.

**A benchmark assessment will be given this week on the first three topics we have learned so far. It will take place on Monday for the pm math class and on Wednesday for the am math class.  


****We will be having a BENCHMARK assessment this week that assesses knowledge of first three topics.
For social studies this week
We will not be back in social studies until late October.

For science this week
*Continue our unit of Astronomy.
*Add to our vocabulary relating to Astronomy.

Math II- activity

Language Arts/writing - Complete homework chart (See below)
Monday: Complete your vocabulary sheet. (This means to locate a challenge word in your composition book and fill out the vocabulary diagram.) Read for 20 min. Be sure to mark it down in your log.   Don’t forget to you’re your parents your assignment book and ask them to sign it.  

Tuesday: Complete activity given out in class. Read for 15 min.  
Wednesday: Utilize any 5 spelling words in 5 complete silly sentences without using the word I in them. Have someone awe-inspiring give you a pre-test. Write words missed three times each. Read any story to someone out loud for 15 min. Read any story to like aloud to someone human for 20 min. Ask the person you read aloud to sign/initial your assignment book when finished.  

Thursday: Have an outgoing weekend with family and friends!

Friday: No school - Teacher in-service day
Reading - Read for 20 minutes and have your parent or guardian sign your reading log. If you lose your log, have a piece of paper ready to hand in with when you read, what you read and how long on it with a signature.

WEDNESDAY night is read aloud. Be sure to read to someone human and have them sign your agenda book. :)
Social Studies - none

Science - Benchmark assessment coming up on Oct. 27th.


***If you use a homework pass, it will not count for pictures, with questions, special assignments or reading aloud. (The students know this)

Announcements
*Our Halloween parade will be on October 31st at 12:20p.m. Children are allowed to bring their costumes into school. They cannot wear face paint to school or put it on at school. If you absolutely need face paint, put the min. amount on for the entire day. They also cannot bring weapons. At 12:15, the children will get their costumes on, and then we will go to the gym and then parade at 12:20. After that, we will come back to the room and have our celebration. Our room parents will be working out the details. Please contact Mrs. Bradshaw for more details.

*We are in need of scissors and skinny expo markers for our classroom. If you have some spare sets at home you could donate, it would be most appreciated. Thank you.

* All graded work will come home on Mondays. If there is something they need to improve on, please sign the paper and send back to school on Tuesday. Thank you.  

*Please review what it means to put your name, date and number on your paper with your child. If the paper comes in without their name on it, they will lose 10 % points off their paper. Thank you.
                                      
*Your child should be reading for 20 min every night and filling out their reading log. On Thursday, you should be signing your child’s reading log so that they can turn it in on Friday..  

•On Monday nights, please initial the assignment book noting that you are aware of all the homework that is due this week, and then again on Wednesday after they have read aloud to you.
