GRADE 8 MATHEMATICS

We are now starting Chapter 2 Ratios, Rates and Proportional Reasoning. It has 3 sections and you will have 3 weeks for this chapter. Each Monday I will post instructions and at the end, a hand in assignment.

Section 2.1 - page 46 Two term and Three term ratios.

Students are to copy in their notes and memorize the definitions of two term ratio, three term ratio (p.47), part to part ratio and part to whole ratio (p.48).

A reminder that a ratio can be written in 3 ways : with the word 'to', with : (official ratio notation) and as a fraction.

Students are to read carefully Examples 1 and 2 on pages 47 - 50, as well as the Key Notes on page 50-51.

Use the back of the book answers only AFTER attempting to do assigned practice questions yourselves.

Students are to work on page 51-53 # 5-18 and page 70 # 6-10. Try to finish all this by next Monday when we will look at section 2.1.  Contact me by e-mail if you have any difficulty or questions. Always show your work as much as possible, depending on the question.

Sample example of solution:

#15 on page 52:

a) Find the GCF greatest common factor of 100, 300 and 250, then divide all three terms of ratio by it.

Romano : Mozarella : Cottage Cheese = 100 g : 300 g : 250 g

GCF = 50  Divide all three terms by 50

Romano : Mozarella : Cottage Cheese = 2 : 6 : 5 - this is the ratio in lowest terms.

b) Romano : Mozarella : Cottage Cheese = 100 g : 300 g : 250 G =  ? : 900 g : ?

compare the middle term, Mozarella, to find the change - from 300 to 900 you multiply by 3

So multiply the other two original terms by 3 and you get 300 : 900 : 750

You need 300 g of Romano cheese and 750 g of Cottage cheese

I hope this was useful on how to try showing your work, not just writing the answer !
