GRADE 7 MATHEMATICS

We are now starting Chapter 8 Circles. We are aiming at doing it over 2 weeks. At the end I will post a hand in assignment.

This week I will talk about the first 3 sections. Next Monday I will post details about the last 2 sections.

SECTION 8.1 Construct Circles - page 268

Students will copy and learn the definitions of radius (p. 268) and diameter (p.269)

Students will read Example 2 on page 269-270 carefully . You can look at Example 1 but I will not worry about using string to draw circles, we need to make sure everyone knows how to use a compass efficiently. Use scrap paper and practice as much as necessary to draw smooth, uninterrupted circles, using only 1 hand to handle the compass !! You know you are successful if your circles are smooth and uninterrupted.

Students should work on page 271 - 272 # 5-10.

SECTION 8.2 Circumference of a Circle - page 273

Students should copy and learn the definitions of circumference and pi on page 274, as well as the formula for the circumference of a circle :   C = 2 X Pi X r  and  C = d x Pi

where r is the radius, d is the diameter and Pi is 3.14 if you are not using the Pi button on the calculator. There are 2 forms of the formula depending on whether they give you the radius or diameter.

Don't forget d = r x 2 and  r = d / 2

Students are to read carefully example 1 and 2 on pages 275-276 and work on page 278-279 # 3-12 (don't estimate where it says so). Show your work as much as possible.

SECTION 8.3 Area of a Circle - page 280

Students should write in their notes and memorize the formula for the area of a circle

A(circle) = Pi x r x r

Read carefully Example 1 on page 282, focus on part b and c and Example 2 on page 283.

For practice work on page 285-286 # 4-13. Show your work as much as possible.

THESE 3 SECTIONS SHOULD BE DONE BY THE END OF NEXT MONDAY !

Contact me any time if you need help or have questions. There is nothing to hand in until we finish the whole chapter.
