October 6, 2014

We are moving along through our new textbooks. It is exciting to see all that we have learned so far. During the weeks, we will also be adding an experiment or two to our schedule. During this time, I may ask students to bring in some supplies. If so, you can check this page and our Homework page for more information. We will be having a quiz on Thursday, October 9, 2014. The study guide is going home today, 10/6/14. There is also a review guide in their textbooks. I have taken the test from the book, and have created my study guide from it as well. We will also try our best to begin our next chapter on Friday. This will begin our physical science unit.

Wednesday and Thursday are Parent Teacher Conferences. We will have half days of school. Students will be dismissed at 12:00pm. Conferences begin at 1pm on Wednesday and Thursday and end at 3pm. Thursday, 10/16, will also have an evening session starting at 5pm and ending at 7pm. Parents are asked to come during the allotted time and wait in the hallway for the teacher(s) they would like to see.

A lot of students are getting close to being 1/4 of the way done with the 40 Book Challenge. It is very exciting to see so many students engaged in reading. There are some incentives to the challenge that have been added within the past week.

  • After reading 1 book, and completing an index card for the book, students will receive a FREE book coupon for Scholastic Book Club.
  • After reading 10 books, students will receive another FREE book club coupon.
  • If students complete the entire 40 Book Challenge, they will receive a special, surprise gift.

The 40 Book Challenge is NOT a requirement, however, the Reading Response Journals ARE required. Students are expected to be reading each week. This book (or books) that they are reading should be talked about in their Reading Response Journal letters.

We finished our first read a loud book, The Fourteenth Goldfish. Our class really enjoyed the book. We have begun our Global Read Aloud book, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. We are continuing to work on our Mysterious Beeping Noise stories, and our studies of verbs.

I look forward to a fantastic week with you all.

I cannot believe that October is already here. The year seems to be flying by. On 10/2/14, Power School passwords were sent home with your students. The Language Arts subcategories are weighted as such: Grammar 45%, Writing 35%, and Spelling 20%. I will have Power School updated by each weekend.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 7 at 1:30pm we will celebrate the Living Rosary in the school parking lot.  Please join us if you are free. Students can also bring in their rosaries for this event. On Friday, October 10 we have the Walk-a-thon.  We will begin walking at approximately 1pm.  Dress code will be announced later this week.

October 15 and 16 are conferences.  No appointments will be made.  Parents are asked to come during the allotted time and wait in the hallway for the teacher(s) they would like to see. The times will be sent home in a letter at the end of the week.
