GRADE  8  MATHEMATICS

This week is meant for Section 5.3 Surface Area of a Prism - page 176

Students should read carefully Examples 1 and 2 on pages 177-179 as well as Key Ideas on p. 179.

To find the Surface Area of a Rectangular or Triangular Prism, you need to find the area of each face and then add them up for the total Surface Area. To find the area of each face you need to know and use the area formula for different shapes (rectangle, square, triangle)

Students need to show their work in detail. When labelling the different faces of a prism, use words like: front, back, top, bottom, left, right.

For example # 4 on page 180:

Area front = Length x Width = 14 cm x 12.3 cm = 172.2 cm squared

Area back = same = 172.2 cm squared

Area top = Length x Width = 12.3 cm x 1 cm = 12.3 cm squared

Area bottom = same = 12.3 cm squared

Area right = Length x Width = 14 cm x 1 cm = 14 cm squared

Area left = same = 14 cm squared

Total Surface Area = the sum = 397 cm squared.

Students should show their work in a similar way for all questions.

GRADE 7 RC ELA

This week we will work on Chapter 29 of the Spelling book. Next week it will be the last chapter, chapter 30 and afterwards we will do some writing assignments.

For Chapter 29, students should practice and master the spelling of the list words on page 121 as well as complete and hand in (by next Monday):

p.121 - 124 all items.

GRADE 7 MATHEMATICS

Section 9.3 Exploring Integer Subtraction - p. 323

Students should read Examples 1 and 2 on p. 325-326. Remember that for the tiles, red is positive, blue is negative and the arrow going away means take away (subtract).

For practice, # 5,6,7,8,11,12,13,14 and 16 on p. 327-328.

For ex. # 5: a) +5 - (+3) =

                  b) -7 - (-4) =

Section 9.4 Subtract Integers - p. 330

Students should look at Examples 1 and 2 on p. 331-332 as well as Key Ideas

For practice, # 5 - 10 and 13 - 17 on p. 333-335.

Section 9.4 Apply Integer Operations - p. 336

Students should look carefully at the Example on page 337-338 as well as Key Ideas.

For Practice # 3-8 on page 339-340.

GRADE 8 MATHEMATICS

We are now starting Chapter 5 Surface Area. We will spend 3 weeks on this chapter. It has 4 sections. One week for sections 5.1 and 5.2, the second week for 5.3 and the third week for 5.4.

Section 5.1 View of 3D objects - page 164

Students will read and put in their notes the purple note on page 164 - How to describe a 3D object and read carefully Examples 1,2 and 3 on pages 165-167, as well as Key Ideas on page 168. This section as well as the next are meant to familiarize students with 3D objects before they get to actually think about surface areas.

I only suggest a few questions for practice : # 3,4,6,9 and 10 on p. 168/169

Section 5.2 Nets of 3D Objects - page 170

Students should write and learn the definitions of 'rectangular prism' and ' net' on p. 170, read carefully Examples 1 and 2 on p. 171-172 as well as Key Ideas p 173.

Once again I only suggest a few practice questions, # 3,4,6,7 and 8 on p. 173/174.

Next Monday we will get into the actual Surface Area of Prisms.

GRADE 7 RC ELA

This week students will work on Chapter 28 of their Spelling book. Practice and master the spelling of the list words on page 117.
