GRADE 8 MATHEMATICS

I hope everyone had a Happy Easter and is in good health !

We aim at finishing Chapter 1 this week.

Section 1.3 Critiquing Data Presentation (page 28) - students should read the Example on page 29-30 very carefully, as well as the Key Ideas on page 31. This section as well involves using your words in sentences to explain your answers.

For practice work on page 32-35 questions 4-12 (all), as well as page 37 # 13 and 14. You have 3 days to do all of it. Reserve Friday and Saturday for:

**** HAND IN ASSIGNMENT

From now on, at the end of each chapter there will be a hand in assignment that can be scanned or photographed clearly and e-mailed to me, or handed in at school during office hours 9 am - 1 pm. There is a box with my name on it in front of the office.

For Chapter 1 the hand in assignment is page 38-39 Practice Test # 1-9 (all). Please submit it by the end of Monday, April 20.

Next Monday we will begin to look at Chapter 2 and on that day I will post more details.

GRADE 7 MATHEMATICS

The goal is to finish Capter 3 this week.

Section 3.5 Area of Triangle (page 108) - students should read examples 1,2 and 3 on pages 110, 111 and 112 carefully, as well as Key Ideas on page 112.

Students should copy  as notes the Key Ideas on page 112 and memorize the formula :  A (triangle) = (b x h) / 2

For practice, work on questions 4,5,8,9,10,11,14 and 17 on pages 113-115, as well as page 117 # 16 and 17

Show your work, use some words for word problems and pay attention to units.

**** FOR HANDING IN

Starting now, at the end of each chapter I will assign a hand in assignment . It can be scanned or photographed with your phone and e-mailed or it can be dropped off at school during office hours 9 am - 1 pm. There is a box with my name in front of the office.

GRADE 7 MATHEMATICS

I hope everypne is well !

By now all students should be able to use the protractor, compass and ruler efficiently.

Section 3.3 Draw Angle Bisectors (p.94)

 - Copy and learn the definitions of acute angle, obtuse angle and angle bisector on p.94-95.

 - Read carefully Example 1 on p. 95-96. You need to understand and master both methods ! (we will not worry about the paper folding startegy).

 - work on questions 6-12 on p.98.

E-mail me at any time if you have questions.

Section 3.4 Area of Parallelogram (p. 100)

- copy and learn definitions of parallelogram, base and height (p.100-101)

- read carefully Example 2 on p.103 and Example 3 on p. 104

- memorize formula for area :    A = b x h  (area equals base time height)

- work on question 3-14 on p. 105-106. There are final answers at the end of the book but I will post some detailed solutions at the end of next week.

My next posting will be at the end of next week, regarding the rest of the chapter. Contact me at any time by e-mail.

GRADE 8 MATHEMATICS

I hope everyone is well and finished the chapter on solving equations as per my previous posting.

As I outlined earlier. the next two weeks, the week of Monday April 6 and the week of Monday April 13 should be spent on Chapter 1 Representing Data. Once again, all students should have their textbooks with them. If there is anyone at all who doesn't, try going to:

http://learningcentre.nelson.com/student/9780070973381/9780070973381.htm

and download it.

The chapter has 3 sections, so you should spend about 4 days per section, leaving you with 2 days for a review. This topic and the questions that go with it involve long answers written in sentences.

Section 1.1 (page 6) - copy, understand and memorize the definition of 'interval' (p.6)

                               - study and know the TYPES OF GRAPHS (p.7 bottom)

                               - read carefully and refer back to when needed Example 1 (p.8) and Example 2 (p.10)

                                - use as notes the KEY IDEAS on page 12, focusing on which type of graph is best suited for which situation !!!

                                - complete questions # 4-15 on pages 13-17. The answers at the back of the book are useful but should be used only to CHECK AFTER doing the questions yourselves.

E-mail me at any time if you need help or clarification.

Section 1.2 Misrepresenting Data (p. 18) - Read carefully the 3 examples of how to distort graphs in order to misrepresent data (p. 19-22) and Key Ideas p.22

                                  -  work on questions 4-19 page 23-27. Some questions will ask you to draw a correct graph, don't forget about using a ruler and neatness...

                                  - the answers at the back of the book are again useful but only after you answer the questions. You may use your own words as long as you express the same ideas.

This should take you to Monday, April 13 when I will post some details about the rest of the chapter. Contact me if there is anything unclear.

Stay safe !

GRADE 8 MATH

I have attached as files 2 pdfs with answers/solutions to the worksheets and some textbook questions. I hope they are useful. If you spot any mistakes or have any questions, let me know.

This concludes the chapter on solving equations. Every student has the opportunity to test themselves at length by choosing any number of questions from the hundreds that we have done and corrected. Give yourself a diagnostic test, or two or three until you are satisfied that you have mastered the topic.

Next week is Spring Break and the week after you should start looking at Chapter 1 Representing Data. It had 3 sections and we will cover it over a period of 2 weeks. Next Thursday I will post what exactly to look at and what questions to practice.

Keep safe and God bless you !
